Stone schoolhouse at Queen and James Streets

Stone schoolhouse on the southwest corner of Queen and James Streets.

By 1845, St. Marys had a population of 100 people! It had three stores, several mills and a number of small stone quarries. The first schoolhouse, a one-room structure built of limestone, was also used as a meeting place by the community and as a church by several religious groups. As this was the only school in the village, one teacher taught all class levels. Gordon Meighen was the school’s first teacher. In 1920, his grandson, Arthur Meighen, became Canada’s ninth prime minister.
